About Your Guide

Hi folks,

My name is Tom and welcome to my new venture……

“Islay Encounters” is a wildlife and nature guiding business set amongst the amazing beauty of the west coast Scottish Island of Islay.

It is a fact that being out and about in nature is a great way to de-stress and recharge from the demands of everyday life. My goal is to create truly memorable experiences in truly stunning surroundings.

So, what about me…

I have lived on Islay for over 35 years, and prior to that spent many summer holidays on the island as a budding young naturalist. My family uprooted and moved to Port Ellen permanently in the late 80s. Upon leaving school, I had the privilege of turning my hobby into a career. Gaining the appropriate qualifications, I have spent the majority of my working life on the ruggedly beautiful south coast of Islay employed on a local estate. My role helped to deliver, among other things, wildlife conservation, habitat, woodland, and deer management.

Now…. Time for a change!

Over the years I’ve extensively explored the coastal, woodland and moorland habitats giving me an unparalleled knowledge of the less trodden path and of what makes the south of Islay so unique.  I’m happiest outdoors, binoculars in hand, kicking back and immersing myself in the sights and sounds around me.

Nature is an infinite subject and if you take the time to stop and look and listen…you will literally learn something new every day.

I very much look forward to sharing my passion for Islay’s natural world, and perhaps some of its history, myths, and legends……

Slainte.!
